Crane's Roofer Since 1988
Crane is a little over an hour from our Midland office, so it's close enough that our crews are out there often. They take I-20 to Odessa, then US 385 south, the same highway that keeps going toward McCamey. Roofs by Nicholas has been part of West Texas since 1988, when Dan Nicholas started roofing in Midland by himself. More than 30,000 roofs and 70 million square feet later, we're still serving towns like Crane that depend on the oil field. We also work in nearby Odessa and McCamey and on properties out in the county. If you'd like to know where your roof stands, we'll come out and give you a free estimate.
Hail and Wind Damage Repair in Crane
In Crane County, a roof takes a beating from more than one direction. Spring brings the risk of hail and strong storms, and the wind can blow hard for days at a time. Then summer arrives with heat and sun that fade and dry out shingles. Damage from any of these can be hard to spot from the ground, which is why an inspection is a good idea after a storm. We'll look over the roof, photograph any problems, and write up an estimate you can share with your insurer. We're also happy to meet your adjuster on-site if you'd find that helpful. If parts of the roof are open after a storm, we can help get exposed areas tarped.
Roofing in Crane: the local picture
Crane is the Crane County seat and its only town, about 45 minutes southwest of our Midland office by way of Odessa and US 385, which runs 32 miles north to Odessa and 21 miles south to McCamey. The 2020 census counted 3,478 people in 1,182 households. The town grew up after oil was found in 1926, and the housing shows it: the median house was built in 1972, about a quarter of all homes date from the 1950s, nearly half predate 1970, and fewer than 15 percent have been built since 2000. About 78 percent of units are detached single-family houses and about 77 percent are owner-occupied.
Crane has a documented hail history. On the evening of May 6, 2015, golf-ball to baseball hail (2.75 inches) hit town; NWS Midland surveyed the damage the next day with the county emergency management coordinator and found it concentrated south of North County Road, mostly to vehicles but with damage at several homes. Overnight on May 5 to 6, 2025, tennis-ball hail (2.5 inches) was reported in Crane. Quarter-size hail fell on May 16, 2024 and early on May 18, 2021, and a 65 mph gust was measured just north of town early on October 18, 2025. The City of Crane's published forms cover mobile home permits and a setback ordinance but say nothing about re-roofing, so we confirm with City Hall (432-558-3563) before each job. We serve all of Crane ISD, plus Odessa, Pleasant Farms, McCamey, Rankin, Imperial and Monahans.

Roofing for Crane's Homes and Oilfield Service Buildings
Crane is the county seat and the main town in Crane County, and it has long been a hub for serving the surrounding oil fields. That means a lot of metal shops, yards, and service buildings alongside the homes in town. We roof both. Class 4 impact-resistant shingles are the most common choice for homeowners, since they're made to resist hail better than standard shingles. Standing seam metal works well for shops, and stone-coated steel is an option for homes that want metal strength with a traditional look. For commercial buildings, we install and repair TPO, EPDM, built-up, and metal roofs, and we can set up a maintenance plan built around your building.

Crane Roofing Questions
Do you really come out to Crane from Midland?
Yes. Crane is about 45 minutes from our office, I-20 to Odessa and then US 385 south, and we also serve Odessa, McCamey, Rankin and Monahans, so a crew is in Crane County often. Homes, shops and ranch buildings out in the county are normal work for us. Phones are answered 24 hours a day at 432-520-7348.
Do I need a permit to re-roof in Crane?
The City of Crane's online forms cover mobile home permits and building setbacks but do not mention roofing, so we confirm with City Hall at 432-558-3563 before we start and pull a permit if one is required.
Can you roof an oilfield service building or shop in Crane?
Yes. We install and repair standing seam and screw-down metal, TPO, EPDM and built-up roofs on service buildings, shops and offices along US 385. We carry general liability and workers' comp, provide a certificate of insurance on request, and offer maintenance plans for commercial roofs.
Can I finance a roof in Crane, and what warranty do I get?
Financing is through Wisetack; prequalify online without affecting your credit. Every roof carries our written workmanship warranty, up to 1 year on repairs and up to 5 years on replacements, plus the manufacturer's warranty. As an Owens Corning Platinum Preferred Contractor and CertainTeed ShingleMaster we can offer both manufacturers' extended coverage.
What did the 2015 and 2025 hailstorms do to Crane roofs?
On May 6, 2015, golf-ball to baseball hail hit town hard enough that the National Weather Service surveyed the damage the next day, mostly south of North County Road. Ten years later, on the night of May 5 to 6, 2025, tennis-ball hail was reported in Crane. If your roof was on the house for either storm and has not been inspected, call us for a free look.
Is a Class 4 roof worth it in Crane?
For most homes, yes. Crane has taken 2.5-inch-plus hail twice in ten years, and many Texas insurers discount premiums for Class 4 impact-resistant shingles. We price standard and Class 4 side by side so you can see the difference, and you should ask your agent what your policy offers.
My house is from the 1950s or 60s. What should I expect?
Nearly half of Crane homes predate 1970 and about a quarter were built in the 1950s. Expect at least one old layer to tear off, some plank decking to replace at a per-sheet price we quote in advance, new drip edge and flashing, and synthetic underlayment with ice-and-water shield in the valleys. We photograph the deck before covering it.
Which roof handles Crane's hail and wind best?
On houses, a Class 4 architectural shingle with six nails per shingle, a sealed starter course and good ridge venting. On shops and oilfield buildings, standing seam metal or a fully adhered TPO membrane holds up better than exposed-fastener panels in constant wind and large hail. We install all of them.
