Big Spring’s Roofer Since 1988
Dan Nicholas founded Roofs by Nicholas in 1988, and since then we’ve completed more than 30,000 roofs across the Permian Basin. We serve Big Spring, Coahoma, Forsan, Sand Springs, and the rest of Howard County from our Midland office, about 40 miles down I-20.
Every job starts with a free estimate and a full roof inspection. We photograph what we find, explain it in plain language, and tell you whether you need a repair, a replacement, or nothing at all before any work begins.
Hail and Wind Damage Repair in Big Spring
Howard County storms hit roofs two ways. Hail cracks and bruises shingles and knocks granules loose, which shortens the life of the roof even when there’s no leak yet. High wind lifts shingle tabs, breaks seals, and pulls flashing away from walls, vents, and chimneys.
After a storm, we inspect every slope of your roof along with the gutters, vents, and flashing. If water is already getting in, we’ll tarp or seal the area as soon as it’s safe, then schedule the permanent repair. If you’re filing a claim, we document the damage for your insurance company and can meet your adjuster on-site when you ask us to. Not sure which you need? Roofing in Big Spring: The Local Picture
Big Spring is the Howard County seat, where US 87 crosses I-20 and FM 700 loops the city, about 40 miles east of our Midland office. The 2020 census counted about 26,000 people, and the housing is older than Midland’s: the median house was built in 1963, more than half the homes date from the 1950s and 60s, and only about 6 percent have been built since 2010. About 77 percent are single-family houses and 65 percent are owner-occupied. Kentwood, Silver Hills near Comanche Trail Park, the streets off Wasson Road and the neighborhoods along Birdwell Lane and Gregg Street are where most of our Big Spring work is.
Big Spring is one of the most hail-prone towns we serve. On May 16, 2018, golf-ball to baseball hail fell across the south side in Silver Hills and on Warren and Grace streets off Wasson Road. On May 20, 2019, baseball hail hit the Kentwood subdivision and 2-inch hail fell at Wasson Road and RR 33. On May 22, 2016, an EF3 tornado west of town near SH 176 took the whole roof off a home, and that same May brought 70 mph winds that blew roofs off houses and left 10,000 people without power. In 2025 it got worse: storm chasers measured 2 to 3 inch hail around the city on May 29, and on June 8 a microburst with winds estimated at 119 mph ran 4.3 miles through central Big Spring, peeling back metal roofs and breaking most of the west-facing windows at the Hotel Settles with wind-driven hail. The city requires a permit to re-roof, with a $50 residential fee and landfill rules for the old roof. We pull it on every job and cover all of Big Spring ISD, Forsan ISD and Coahoma ISD, plus Sand Springs and Knott.

Big Spring Roofing Questions
Do I need a permit to re-roof in Big Spring?
Yes. The City of Big Spring’s permit FAQ says a permit is required to re-roof a house. The permit is $50 for a residential re-roof and $75 for a commercial re-roof, no contractor bond is required, you must have the permit to dump at the city landfill, and the inspector checks the finished work. We pull it at 217 E 3rd St before we start. Our West Texas roof permit guide lists the rules in other nearby towns.
How bad was the June 8, 2025 storm?
The National Weather Service surveyed a microburst with top winds estimated at 119 mph on a path 4.3 miles long through central Big Spring. Most of the damage was metal roofing peeled back or torn off, and wind-driven hail broke the west-facing windows at the Hotel Settles. That came ten days after 2 to 3 inch hail on May 29. If your roof has not been inspected since, it should be.
Which Big Spring neighborhoods get hit by hail?
All of them, but the south side has the recent record: Silver Hills and the streets off Wasson Road in May 2018, Kentwood in May 2019, and the whole city in May and June 2025. Hail bruising on shingles usually does not leak for a year or more, so a free estimate after any storm is worth it.
Do you really come out to Big Spring?
Yes. Big Spring is about 40 minutes east on I-20, we have customers there going back years, and we also serve Coahoma, Forsan, Sand Springs, Stanton and Colorado City, so a crew is in Howard County most weeks.
My house is from the 1950s or 60s. What should I expect?
Most Big Spring homes are. Expect at least one old layer to tear off, plank decking with some boards to replace at a per-sheet price we quote up front, and new drip edge, flashing and underlayment. The old roof goes to the city landfill under the permit, and the city inspects the finished job.
How long does a roof replacement take?
Most Big Spring homes take one to two days once the permit is issued and materials are delivered. Larger homes and metal roofs can take three or four. We give you a schedule before we start and a daily update while we are there.
Which roof holds up best to Big Spring hail?
Class 4 impact-resistant shingles carry the highest UL 2218 hail rating and many insurers discount premiums for them. Standing seam metal handles wind best. After 2025, we recommend one or the other for every Big Spring home; we price both on the free estimate.
