Shingle Roofers in Midland, TX

Shingle roofs are the most common choice for homes in Midland,
Odessa, and Big Spring, and most of our residential customers choose Class 4 impact-resistant shingles. As an Owens Corning Platinum Preferred Contractor, Roofs by Nicholas of Midland has installed shingle roofs across the Permian Basin since 1988, with more than 30,000 roofs completed.

Class 4 Impact-Resistant Shingles

Class 4 is the highest rating under the UL 2218 impact test, in which a 2-inch steel ball is dropped onto the shingle and the shingle must not crack. No shingle is hail-proof, but Class 4 shingles hold up much better against West Texas hail than standard shingles do. The Class 4 shingle we install most is Owens Corning Duration STORM. Many Texas insurers offer a premium discount for Class 4 roofs, which can offset some of the higher upfront cost over time. Ask your agent what your policy offers. If hail has already damaged your roof, see our hail and damage repair page.

Shingle replacements start at $3.75 per square foot of roof area for standard asphalt shingles and $5.00 for Class 4 impact-resistant shingles, including tear-off. Your written estimate will show the exact price for your roof.

Architectural Shingles

If you want a lower upfront cost, architectural shingles are a solid option. They're thicker and more dimensional than older 3-tab shingles, and they come in a wide range of Owens Corning colors and styles. During your free estimate, we'll compare the cost of architectural and Class 4 shingles for your home so you can choose what fits your budget.

How We Install a Shingle Roof

We tear the old roof down to the decking and check every board. If we find damaged decking, we'll show you what we found and what it adds to the job before we replace it. Then we install new underlayment and your shingles to Owens Corning's specifications. Most homes take one to two days once work begins.

Our workmanship warranty covers the installation, and Owens Corning's manufacturer warranty covers the materials. We'll go over the terms with you before work starts. Financing is available through Wisetack.

Shingle Roofing FAQs

  • Are Class 4 shingles worth the extra cost?

For most homeowners in the Permian Basin, yes, which is why most of our residential customers choose them. Class 4 shingles cost more upfront than architectural shingles, but they hold up much better against the hail we see every spring. Many insurers also offer a premium discount for Class 4 roofs, which can offset some of that difference over time. We'll show you the price of both options during your free estimate.

  • Will a Class 4 roof lower my insurance premium?

It often does. Many Texas insurers offer a discount for roofs rated Class 4 under the UL 2218 impact test, but the amount varies by carrier and policy. Ask your agent what your policy offers before you choose a shingle. We can provide the product details your insurer needs to apply the discount.

  • What's the difference between Class 4 and architectural shingles?

The main difference is impact resistance. Class 4 shingles carry the highest rating under the UL 2218 impact test, while standard architectural shingles don't. Many Class 4 shingles have the same dimensional look as architectural shingles, so you don't give up curb appeal. Architectural shingles cost less upfront and are still a solid roof.

  • How long does a shingle roof last in West Texas?

It depends on the shingle, attic ventilation, and how many hailstorms the roof takes. Intense sun and frequent hail mean shingle roofs here often don't reach the full lifespan a manufacturer advertises. In practice, hail ends more roofs in the Permian Basin than age does. That's a big reason Class 4 shingles are popular here.

  • How can I tell if my shingles have hail damage?

Hail damage is often hard to see from the ground. Look for granules collecting in your gutters or at the bottom of downspouts, dents on vents or gutters, and dark spots where shingles have lost granules. If a storm has passed through, the safest step is a free inspection. See our hail and damage repair page for more.

  • What warranty comes with a new shingle roof?

Our workmanship warranty covers roof replacements for up to 5 years, and Owens Corning's manufacturer warranty covers the shingles and other materials. Coverage depends on the products you choose. We'll go over the terms with you before work starts.
