Gardendale's Roofer Since 1988

Gardendale sits in northern Ector County, about 30 minutes from our Midland office by way of SH 158. That is a quick, familiar drive for our crews, and it keeps us close to neighboring areas like Goldsmith to the west and the north side of Odessa along US 385. Roofs by Nicholas has been roofing in the Permian Basin since Dan Nicholas founded the company in Midland in 1988. What started as a one-man business has now completed more than 30,000 roofs, and we have been voted Gold for Best Roofing Company in the Midland Reporter-Telegram Readers' Choice every year since 2018. If your Gardendale home, barn, or shop needs attention, we will come out, walk the property with you, and put a free estimate in your hands.

Gardendale's wide-open acreage gives storms plenty of room to build speed. Spring is the main hail season, and the same systems can bring wind strong enough to lift shingles and loosen metal panels on barns and covered arenas. Over the summer, intense sun and blowing dust break down roofing materials faster than many people expect. After a storm, we can help get exposed areas tarped so rain stays out. Then we will inspect the roof, photograph what we find, and give you a written estimate to share with your insurance company. If you would like us there when the adjuster visits, just ask and we will meet them on-site. The claim itself is between you and your insurer.

Roofing in Gardendale: the local picture

Gardendale is unincorporated Ector County along SH 158, about 30 minutes from our Midland office and 14 miles north of downtown Odessa. The 2020 census counted 2,020 people, up from 1,574 in 2010, and 95 percent of homes are owner-occupied. Nearly half the houses were built since 2010, alongside a 1950s core from the original Neathery Ranch subdivision and a band from the 1980s. About seven in ten are site-built homes and the rest manufactured, nearly all on two-and-a-half to five acre lots with a metal shop, barn or horse pens behind them. Pecan orchards and horse ranches have defined the area since the 1970s.

Gardendale sits under the same storm track that hits north Odessa and Midland. On May 30, 2024, the National Weather Service reported a storm that quickly strengthened over the Gardendale area, producing baseball to softball size hail before it went on to drop an EF2 tornado south of Midland and snap poles along FM 1788. On June 14, 2017, baseball and larger hail crossed Odessa with a probable 100 mph microburst in West Odessa, in a storm the Insurance Council of Texas put at about $480 million. Hail of 1.5 inches fell near North Cowden, just northwest of Gardendale, on June 20, 2020, and 2-inch hail hit north Odessa on June 9, 2024. Ector County does not list a roofing permit for unincorporated areas, so there is no city paperwork to slow a repair down. We serve all of Gardendale, Goldsmith and the SH 158 and FM 1788 corridors.

Everything we install in Midland we install in Gardendale: hail and storm damage repair, full roof replacement, Class 4 impact-resistant shingles, standing seam and stone-coated steel metal roofing, tile, slate and wood shake, and commercial systems including TPO, PVC, EPDM, modified bitumen, built-up and coatings. We also handle seamless gutters, skylights, non-structural chimney repairs such as flashing and caps, and solar-ready roofing with our partner Permian Solar. Pricing is by the square foot of roof area and we quote it in writing before any work starts.

Roofs for Acreage Homes, Barns, and Horse Facilities in Gardendale

Gardendale grew out of the Neathery Ranch, which Odessa developer Fred Gage and his partners bought and divided into homesites in the late 1950s, and it has kept much of that country feel. Pecan orchards and horse ranches have been part of the local story since the 1970s, and today the area is home to Odessa College's Rodeo and Agricultural Graham Center on SH 158. That mix shows up in the roofs we work on: family homes on acreage, horse barns, hay sheds, metal shops, and covered arenas.

Gardendale Roofing Questions

  • Do you roof horse barns and metal shops in Gardendale?

Yes. Most Gardendale lots have a 30x60 or 40x60 shop, a barn or covered pens, and we roof them alongside the house. Standing seam and stone-coated steel are the usual choices for outbuildings; we can match or coordinate with the house roof and do both on one visit.

  • Will insurance cover my hail damage, and do you help with the claim?

Most homeowner policies cover hail. We document the damage with dated photos, prepare a written estimate for your insurer, and meet the adjuster on the roof. Under Texas law we cannot negotiate the claim or waive your deductible, but we make sure nothing gets missed. Financing through Wisetack is available for the deductible or for work insurance does not cover.

  • Can you get to Gardendale quickly after a hailstorm?

Yes. Gardendale is about 30 minutes from our Midland office by SH 158, so we are usually on site within a day or two to tarp, inspect and photograph. Phones are answered 24 hours a day at 432-520-7348.

  • Is a metal roof a good fit for a Gardendale home?

Often, yes. Standing seam metal resists wind uplift, sheds hail better than standard shingles, and matches the shops and barns most properties already have. Class 4 impact-resistant shingles are the other good option and usually cost less; we price both on the free estimate.

  • How big was the hail in the May 30, 2024 storm?

The National Weather Service reported baseball to softball size hail over the Gardendale area that evening before the storm moved toward Midland. If your roof was on the house that day and has not been inspected, it is worth a free look; hail bruising on shingles often does not leak for a year or more.

  • Do I need a permit to re-roof in Gardendale?

No city permit applies because Gardendale is unincorporated, and Ector County's permit list covers development structures, driveways and septic systems, not roofing. If your property is inside Odessa city limits the rules differ, and we will tell you.

  • Do you roof manufactured homes?

Yes. Roughly three in ten Gardendale homes are manufactured. We install shingle or metal roof-overs designed for them, with the proper fastening and edge detail, after checking the roof structure.

Nearby towns we also serve: Odessa, West Odessa, Andrews, Kermit, and Midland.
