Pecos’ Roofer Since 1988

From Midland, it’s a straight run west on I-20 to Pecos, about an hour and a half for our crews. Along the way they pass Monahans, and from Pecos we also cover nearby communities like Barstow and Toyah. That’s a lot of road, but it’s familiar road. Roofs by Nicholas was founded in Midland in 1988 by Dan Nicholas, who started out as a one-man operation, and we’ve completed more than 30,000 roofs across the Permian Basin since. Homes, ranch and farm shops, and commercial buildings in Pecos are all part of our work. Call us, and we’ll schedule a time to inspect your roof and give you a free estimate.

Pecos sits in open country along the Pecos River valley, where spring storms can bring hail and strong gusts with them. Even in calm years, the sun and wind take a toll, and dust gets into every gap. Roofs here tend to show wear at the edges, around vents, and along ridges first. After a storm, the first step is a good inspection. We’ll check the whole roof, photograph any damage, and give you a written estimate you can send to your insurance company. If you want us on-site when the adjuster visits, just ask and we’ll be there. One thing to know: no contractor is allowed to waive or cover your deductible. If part of the roof is open to the weather, we’ll tarp or seal any exposed area as soon as it’s safe.

Roofing in Pecos: The Local Picture

Pecos is the Reeves County seat on the west bank of the Pecos River, where US 285 and SH 17 meet I-20 and Business 20 runs through downtown, about an hour and a half west of our Midland office. The 2020 census counted 12,916 people, up from 8,780 in 2010 on the Delaware Basin boom, and about 4,170 homes. The housing is old: the median house was built in 1965, about 31 percent of homes date from the 1950s alone, and roughly four in five predate 1980. About 77 percent are single-family and 72 percent owner-occupied, with a wave of newer oilfield housing added since 2010.

Pecos takes wind and large hail. On March 12, 2019, 75 mph winds caused roof and structural damage half a mile west of the Pecos airport, and baseball-size hail along County Road 200 north of town destroyed vehicles. On August 27, 2019, 70 mph winds dropped power lines at 8th and Peach. On July 16, 2021, a microburst of 85 to 95 mph flipped travel trailers on FM 1934 south of town. On October 2, 2023, golf-ball to baseball-size hail damaged roofs and walls in Pecos, and local insurance agents reported dozens of claims within a day; CBS7 put typical home claims at $10,000 to $20,000. The Town of Pecos City requires a permit when a re-roof changes materials, such as shingles to metal (shingles to shingles needs none), and the contractor must be registered with $1 million in liability coverage on file. We carry both and cover the whole Pecos-Barstow-Toyah ISD area, from Barstow to Toyah and the farm country along US 285.

Everything we install in Midland we install in Pecos: hail and storm damage repair, full roof replacement, Class 4 impact-resistant shingles, standing seam and stone-coated steel metal roofing, tile, slate and wood shake, and commercial systems including TPO, PVC, EPDM, modified bitumen, built-up and coatings. We also handle seamless gutters, skylights, non-structural chimney repairs such as flashing and caps, and solar-ready roofing with our partner Permian Solar. Pricing is by the square foot of roof area and we quote it in writing before any work starts.

Roofing for Pecos Homes, Farm Buildings, and Oilfield Operations

Pecos is the Reeves County seat and a trade center for ranching, farming, and oil and gas, and it’s famous for its cantaloupes and for claiming the world’s first rodeo. That mix of industries means a wide range of buildings. We roof houses in town, farm and ranch outbuildings, and the metal shops and yards that support oilfield work in the area. Homeowners usually choose Class 4 impact-resistant shingles for their hail resistance, while standing seam metal is popular on barns and shops. For commercial buildings with flat roofs, we offer TPO, EPDM, built-up, and metal systems, along with maintenance plans tailored to each building.

Pecos Roofing Questions

  • Can you get to Pecos quickly after a hailstorm?

Yes. Pecos is about an hour and a half from Midland on I-20 through Monahans, and we also serve Barstow, Toyah, Monahans, Kermit and Wink, so a crew is in the area regularly. We tarp first, then inspect and photograph. Phones are answered 24 hours a day at 432-520-7348.

  • Do I need a permit to replace my roof in Pecos?

Only if you change materials. The Town of Pecos City requires a permit when a re-roof switches roofing materials, such as shingles to metal; replacing shingles with shingles does not need one. When a permit is required, the contractor must be registered with the city and carry at least $1 million in liability insurance naming the city. We pull it at City Hall, 115 W 3rd St, and handle the paperwork; allow up to ten business days.

  • Do you roof farm and ranch buildings around Pecos?

Yes. Standing seam and stone-coated steel for farm shops, barns and equipment sheds along US 285 and the river, and for oilfield yards and offices. TPO, PVC, EPDM and modified bitumen for flat commercial roofs. Certificates of insurance come with the written scope.

  • What do you need from me to give an estimate on a Pecos roof?

Your address and a good phone number. We measure the roof, check the decking and flashing from the roof itself, photograph everything, and send a written per-square-foot quote promptly. If there is storm damage we also prepare the documentation your insurer will ask for.

  • What storms have hit Pecos recently?

Golf-ball to baseball-size hail on October 2, 2023 damaged roofs across town. An 85 to 95 mph microburst hit south of town on July 16, 2021. In March and August 2019, 70 to 75 mph winds caused roof damage near the airport and downed lines at 8th and Peach. If your roof was on the house for any of these, it is worth a free estimate.

  • My Pecos house was built in the 1950s or 60s. What does that mean for a new roof?

That describes about half the homes in Pecos. Expect at least one old layer to come off, plank decking with gaps or soft spots to replace at a per-sheet price we quote in advance, and new drip edge, flashing and underlayment. The permit has to be in hand before we start, and most homes take one to two days once materials arrive.

  • Which roof holds up best to Pecos wind and hail?

Standing seam metal for wind, because the fasteners are hidden and the panels lock. Class 4 impact-resistant shingles for hail, installed with the manufacturer’s high-wind nailing pattern and sealed starter strips. Many insurers discount premiums for Class 4; we price both on the estimate.

  • Can I finance a roof in Pecos, and what warranty do I get?

Financing is through Wisetack; prequalify online without affecting your credit. Every roof carries our written workmanship warranty, up to 1 year on repairs and up to 5 years on replacements, plus the manufacturer’s warranty. As an Owens Corning Platinum Preferred Contractor and CertainTeed ShingleMaster we can offer both manufacturers’ extended coverage.

Also serving: Monahans, Fort Stockton, Wink, and Kermit.
