Colorado City's Roofer Since 1988
It takes our crews about an hour and 15 minutes to get from Midland to Colorado City, a straight run east on Interstate 20 past Big Spring and Coahoma. Once we are in Mitchell County, the work spreads out to Westbrook on the west side, Loraine to the east, and the homes and cabins around Lake Colorado City to the southwest. Roofs by Nicholas has been at this a long time. Dan Nicholas founded the company in Midland in 1988, working alone at first, and we have since grown into an Owens Corning Platinum Preferred Contractor with more than 30,000 roofs completed. A roof in this part of Texas has to handle a lot, and we build every one to last. When you are ready, we will come out, look things over, and give you a free estimate.
Hail and Wind Damage Repair in Colorado City
Colorado City sits along the Colorado River, but the weather that rolls across the surrounding plains still finds every roof in town. Spring storms can bring hail, and the gusty winds that follow them, plus the steady wind most of the year, loosen shingles and lift metal panels at the seams. Summer heat bakes older roofs until they turn brittle. If a storm damages your roof, start by calling us. We will help get exposed areas tarped, inspect the whole roof, and photograph the damage. You will receive a written estimate to share with your insurance company, and we can meet your adjuster on-site if that helps. Keep in mind that no contractor can waive or cover your deductible, and anyone who offers to is breaking Texas law. Roofing in Colorado City: the local picture
Colorado City is the Mitchell County seat on I-20, with Business 20 running along 2nd Street downtown and SH 208 heading north to Snyder and south across Champion Creek Reservoir toward Robert Lee, about an hour and 15 minutes east of our Midland office. The 2020 census counted 3,991 people. The housing is the oldest of any town we serve: the median house was built in 1955, about two-thirds of homes predate 1960, a fifth predate 1940, and essentially nothing has been built since 1990. About 86 percent are single-family houses, with the lake homes, cabins and barndominiums out at Lake Colorado City adding a second kind of roof. The Colorado River runs along the west side of town and Lone Wolf Creek along the east.
The hail record is recent and specific. On May 16, 2021, the same supercell that hit Snyder dropped baseball-size hail in Colorado City, 2-inch hail across town and 1.75-inch hail at the lake. Golf-ball hail hit Lake Colorado City again on May 22, 2024, and on May 10, 2026, 1.5-inch hail fell on the north side of town with 2-inch hail at Westbrook. Wind is the other threat: on June 7, 2018, straight-line winds of 85 to 120 mph crossed northeast Mitchell County, knocking down 86 transmission towers and more than 200 poles. The city requires contractors to register before work begins and treats alterations and repairs under the adopted building codes as permitted work, with a double fee if work starts first. We serve Colorado ISD, Westbrook ISD and Loraine ISD, plus the lake, Cuthbert and the ranch country along FM 1229.

Roofs for Historic Homes, Ranch Buildings, and Lake Cabins in Colorado City
Colorado City started as a cattle town and served as a major shipping point in the 1880s, and it still carries that ranching history alongside oil and farming. As the Mitchell County seat, it has a mix of older homes, county and church buildings, and small businesses, plus ranch property and lake houses outside of town. Older homes sometimes need decking repair before a new roof goes on, and we replace any damaged boards so the new roof has a solid base. For barns, pole buildings, and lake cabins, metal is a smart choice: standing seam and stone-coated steel stand up to wind and need little maintenance. Commercial and church roofs can be done in TPO, EPDM, or metal, with a maintenance plan if you want one.

Colorado City Roofing Questions
Do you really drive out to Colorado City?
Yes. Colorado City is about an hour and 15 minutes east on I-20 through Big Spring, and we also serve Snyder, Roscoe, Sweetwater and Robert Lee, so a crew is in Mitchell County regularly. We plan out-of-town jobs so materials and crew arrive together.
What hail has hit Colorado City recently?
Baseball-size hail on May 16, 2021, golf-ball hail at the lake on May 22, 2024, and 1.5 to 2 inch hail on the north side of town and at Westbrook on May 10, 2026. Hail that size bruises shingles without an obvious leak, so a free inspection after any of these is worth it.
Do I need a permit to re-roof in Colorado City?
The city requires contractors to register before starting work inside city limits and requires a permit for alterations and repairs covered by its building codes, with the fee doubled if work starts first. We are registered and we pull the permit at City Hall, 180 W 3rd Street.
Can you roof a cabin or house at Lake Colorado City?
Yes. Lake homes, cabins and barndominiums on CR 254, CR 315 and the roads around the state park are a regular part of our Mitchell County work. Standing seam metal suits most lake buildings; Class 4 shingles are the alternative for a conventional house.
My house is older. Will you check the decking under the shingles?
Always. Two-thirds of Colorado City homes predate 1960 and many have plank decking with gaps, more than one shingle layer, and no drip edge. We tear off to the deck, replace damaged boards at a per-sheet price quoted up front, and install synthetic underlayment and ice-and-water shield in the valleys before the new roof goes on.
How do I know if my roof needs a repair or a full replacement?
We tell you honestly after a free inspection. Isolated wind damage, a failed pipe boot or a few bruised shingles usually mean a repair. Widespread hail bruising, more than one existing layer, or a roof past 20 years on a 1950s house usually means replacement, and if a storm caused it, insurance may pay for most of it.
Which roof handles Mitchell County wind?
Standing seam metal, because the fasteners are hidden and the panels lock together; the June 2018 straight-line winds here reached 85 to 120 mph. For shingles, choose a high wind rating installed with the manufacturer's six-nail pattern and sealed starter strips.
Can I finance a roof in Colorado City, and what warranty do I get?
Financing is through Wisetack; prequalify online without affecting your credit. Every roof carries our written workmanship warranty, up to 1 year on repairs and up to 5 years on replacements, plus the manufacturer's warranty. As an Owens Corning Platinum Preferred Contractor and CertainTeed ShingleMaster we can offer both manufacturers' extended coverage.
