Brick home with tall arched windows and a new dark shingle roof completed by Roofs by Nicholas

Sweetwater's Roofer Since 1988

From our Midland office, Sweetwater is a little under two hours east on Interstate 20, past Colorado City and Roscoe. It is one of the longer drives on our regular map, and we make it gladly. Around the Nolan County seat we also serve homes out by Lake Sweetwater and down toward Blackwell, south of town. Our story goes back to 1988, when Dan Nicholas founded Roofs by Nicholas in Midland and handled every job himself. Since then the company has put on more than 30,000 roofs and earned Owens Corning Platinum Preferred status. For you, that means a crew that knows West Texas weather and stands behind its workmanship. Let us know when you would like someone to come by, and we will give you a free written estimate.

Sweetwater sits among some of the largest wind farms in Texas, and for good reason. The wind here rarely lets up, and over time it works at shingle edges, ridge caps, and loose flashing. Add spring hail, summer heat, and dust, and roofs around Nolan County take steady punishment. When a storm does come through, we answer calls 24/7. If water is getting in, we can help get exposed areas tarped. After that, we inspect the whole roof, photograph the damage, and write up an estimate you can send to your insurer. Prefer to have us there when the adjuster arrives? We will meet them at your home. A roofing contractor can't negotiate your claim under Texas law, but we can make sure the damage is clearly documented.

Roofing in Sweetwater: the local picture

Sweetwater is the Nolan County seat, where I-20 and US 84 run together along the south side of town, SH 70 heads north to Roby and south to Blackwell, and Business 20 follows Broadway through downtown, a little under two hours east of our Midland office. The 2020 census counted 10,622 people and about 4,200 households. The housing is old: the median house was built in 1963, four in five homes predate 1980, and fewer than 5 percent have been built since 2000. About 74 percent are single-family houses and 60 percent are owner-occupied. Nolan County has more than 1,000 wind turbines between the Sweetwater and Roscoe wind farms, and TSTC's Sweetwater campus started the first community-college wind-energy program in Texas.

The wind that turns the turbines is the wind that lifts shingles. On June 21, 2023, 74 mph gusts measured at Avenger Field blew the roof off a house and brought down power lines downtown, tore shingles off homes, and blew a metal roof off in Roscoe. On April 1, 2024, a downburst heavily damaged a cotton warehouse southwest of town and dropped poles in Sweetwater and Roscoe. Hail comes with it: on April 25, 2023, hail from 2.25 inches in town to 2.75 inches two miles east damaged city fire and police vehicles, and golf-ball hail hit Sweetwater in May 2017, October 2017, March 2018 and May 2019. The City of Sweetwater lists "Roof" as a permit category, charges $150 for a residential roofing-only permit as of October 2026, and requires roofers to register with the city at no charge. We are registered and we pull the permit. We serve Sweetwater ISD, Roscoe Collegiate ISD and Blackwell, plus Maryneal and the ranches off FM 608 and FM 1856.

Everything we install in Midland we install in Sweetwater: hail and storm damage repair, full roof replacement, Class 4 impact-resistant shingles, standing seam and stone-coated steel metal roofing, tile, slate and wood shake, and commercial systems including TPO, PVC, EPDM, modified bitumen, built-up and coatings. We also handle seamless gutters, skylights, non-structural chimney repairs such as flashing and caps, and solar-ready roofing with our partner Permian Solar. Pricing is by the square foot of roof area and we quote it in writing before any work starts.

Roofs for Sweetwater Homes, Plants, and Shops

Sweetwater has a working economy built on wind energy, gypsum and cement plants, ranching, and the West Texas campus of Texas State Technical College. That gives us a wide range of buildings to work on. Around town we replace roofs on older frame homes and brick houses, usually with Class 4 shingles. Industrial and commercial owners often need TPO, EPDM, built-up, or metal systems, and we can set up a custom maintenance plan to keep those roofs watertight between replacements. On ranches around the county, metal shops and barns are common, and standing seam or stone-coated steel is a natural fit.

Sweetwater Roofing Questions

  • Is Sweetwater too far for Roofs by Nicholas?

No. Sweetwater is a little under two hours east on I-20, and we also serve Roscoe, Colorado City, Snyder and Blackwell, so a crew is in the area regularly. Out-of-town jobs are scheduled so materials and crew arrive together, and phones are answered 24 hours a day.

  • Can I finance a roof in Sweetwater, and what warranty do I get?

Financing is through Wisetack; prequalify online without affecting your credit. Every roof carries our written workmanship warranty, up to 1 year on repairs and up to 5 years on replacements, plus the manufacturer's warranty. As an Owens Corning Platinum Preferred Contractor and CertainTeed ShingleMaster we can offer both manufacturers' extended coverage.

  • Which roof handles Sweetwater's wind best?

Properly installed Class 4 shingles hold up well, and correct nailing and starter strips matter as much as the shingle itself. Standing seam metal is another strong option because its concealed fasteners and interlocking seams resist uplift. Stone-coated steel combines the look of shingles or shake with metal's durability. We will recommend what fits your home and budget.

  • What storms have hit Sweetwater recently?

On June 21, 2023, 74 mph winds blew a roof off a house downtown and tore shingles across town. On April 25, 2023, hail over 2 inches damaged city emergency vehicles. On April 1, 2024, a downburst took down poles in Sweetwater and Roscoe. If your roof has not been inspected since 2023, it should be.

  • Do I need a permit to re-roof in Sweetwater?

Yes. The City of Sweetwater's permit application lists roofing as a permit category, the fee schedule effective October 1, 2026 sets a residential roofing-only permit at $150, and roofers must be registered with the city (registration is free). We pull the permit at 200 E 4th Street and schedule the inspection; inspections are by appointment, weekday mornings.

  • Do you work on commercial and industrial roofs in Sweetwater?

Yes. TPO, PVC, EPDM, modified bitumen, built-up and coating systems for plants, warehouses, shops and the businesses along Broadway and the I-20 frontage, plus standing seam and stone-coated steel for metal buildings. Certificates of insurance and a written scope come before the work.

  • My house is from the 1950s or 60s. What should I expect?

Most Sweetwater homes are. Expect at least one old layer to tear off, plank decking with some boards to replace at a per-sheet price quoted up front, and new drip edge, flashing and underlayment with ice-and-water shield in the valleys. The city permit has to be in hand before we start.

  • Does insurance cover wind damage, and do you help with the claim?

Most homeowner policies cover wind and hail. We document the damage with dated photos, write the estimate your insurer needs, and meet the adjuster on the roof. Under Texas law we cannot negotiate the claim or waive your deductible, but we make sure nothing is missed.

Nearby towns we also serve: Roscoe, Colorado City, Snyder, Robert Lee, and San Angelo.
