Brick ranch home with a new gray shingle roof completed by Roofs by Nicholas

Roscoe's Roofer Since 1988

Roscoe is about an hour and 50 minutes from Midland, where Interstate 20 meets U.S. Highway 84. Our crews come in on I-20, passing Colorado City and Loraine along the way, and from Roscoe we also cover farms and homes up U.S. 84 toward Hermleigh. It is a small town with the Union Pacific line running right through the middle, wide-open farmland on every side, and wind turbines on the horizon. Roofs by Nicholas has been roofing West Texas since Dan Nicholas founded it in Midland in 1988, back when he was the entire crew. We have kept his habits of honest advice and careful work through more than 30,000 roofs. If you live in or around Roscoe and your roof needs attention, we would be glad to come out and give you a free estimate.

The same steady wind that turns the blades of the Roscoe Wind Farm is hard on roofs. It finds weak shingle seals, rattles loose flashing, and lifts metal panels on barns. Spring storms can bring hail on top of it, and the summer sun dries out older materials. After a storm, call us 24/7, and we can help get exposed areas tarped. We will inspect your roof, photograph the damage, and give you a written estimate to share with your insurer. If you would like, we can meet your adjuster on-site. Please know that no contractor can legally waive or cover your deductible, so steer clear of anyone who offers.

Roofing in Roscoe: the local picture

Roscoe is in northwest Nolan County, about an hour and 50 minutes east of our Midland office on I-20, where the interstate meets US 84 and FM 608 eight miles west of Sweetwater, with the Union Pacific line through the middle of town. It started as a Texas and Pacific stop called Vista in 1890 and incorporated in 1907. The 2020 census counted 1,271 people. The housing is old and owner-held: the median house was built in 1968, the 1960s are the biggest single decade at about 35 percent of homes, 58 percent of homes predate 1970 and 83 percent predate 1980, and fewer than 3 percent have been built since 2000. About 87 percent of occupied homes are owner-occupied and 98 percent of all units are single-family detached houses. The 627 turbines of the Roscoe Wind Farm around town are there because of the wind, and the wind is what takes roofs here.

The recent damage record is mostly wind. On the night of June 21, 2023, a line of storms blew a metal roof off in Roscoe, dropped power lines south of town at FM 608 and I-20, and gusted to 74 mph at Avenger Field in Sweetwater and at a mesonet site east of Champion; roofs were blown off in Sweetwater the same hour. On May 23, 2023, a tree was blown into power lines in Roscoe with a 60 mph gust west of Sweetwater. On April 1, 2024, power poles were blown down in Roscoe and Sweetwater and a cotton warehouse southwest of Sweetwater was heavily damaged by a downburst. Hail has been smaller: golf-ball hail near Champion in southern Nolan County on April 27, 2024, quarter hail in Roscoe on May 3, 2021 and again on April 13, 2026. The City of Roscoe publishes no building-permit or roofing rule on its website, so we confirm with City Hall before a job. We serve all of Roscoe Collegiate ISD and Nolan County, plus Sweetwater, Loraine, Hermleigh, Colorado City and Snyder.

Everything we install in Midland we install in Roscoe: hail and storm damage repair, full roof replacement, Class 4 impact-resistant shingles, standing seam and stone-coated steel metal roofing, tile, slate and wood shake, and commercial systems including TPO, PVC, EPDM, modified bitumen, built-up and coatings. We also handle seamless gutters, skylights, non-structural chimney repairs such as flashing and caps, and solar-ready roofing with our partner Permian Solar. Pricing is by the square foot of roof area and we quote it in writing before any work starts.

Farm Buildings, Homes, and Shops Around Roscoe and the Wind Farm

Roscoe began as a railroad and cattle-shipping town and today is surrounded by farmland and one of the largest wind farms in Texas. Most of the roofs we see here belong to homes in town, farmhouses on the surrounding land, and the barns, equipment sheds, and shops that go with them. For homes, Class 4 impact-resistant shingles are the most popular choice and offer strong hail protection. For barns and outbuildings, standing seam or stone-coated steel resists wind and weather for decades with little maintenance. We also work on small businesses and churches in town, with TPO, EPDM, and metal options for low-slope and commercial roofs.

Roscoe Roofing Questions

  • Do you really come all the way out to Roscoe?

Yes. Roscoe is about an hour and 50 minutes from our office on I-20, and we also serve Sweetwater, Colorado City, Loraine and Snyder, so a crew is on that stretch of interstate regularly. We stage materials before the trip so the job starts the morning we arrive. Phones are answered 24 hours a day at 432-520-7348.

  • What has the wind done to Roscoe roofs lately?

On June 21, 2023, storms blew a metal roof off in Roscoe and gusted to 74 mph at Avenger Field in Sweetwater; roofs came off in Sweetwater the same night. On April 1, 2024, power poles went down in Roscoe and a cotton warehouse near Sweetwater was wrecked by a downburst. Lifted or creased shingles from either storm may not leak for a year or more; a free inspection settles it.

  • Which roof handles Roscoe wind best?

Standing seam metal, fastened to the manufacturer's high-wind pattern, is the best choice for the open country around the wind farm, and it is what we recommend for shops, barns and most farmhouses. For shingles we install to the manufacturer's high-wind nailing pattern and recommend Class 4 impact-resistant shingles for the hail. We price both on the free estimate.

  • My Roscoe house was built in the 1960s. What should I expect?

About a third of Roscoe's homes were, and 83 percent predate 1980. Expect at least one old layer to tear off, some plank decking to replace at a per-sheet price we quote in advance, and new drip edge, flashing and synthetic underlayment with ice-and-water shield in the valleys.

  • Do I need a City of Roscoe permit to re-roof?

The city does not publish a re-roof permit rule, so we confirm with City Hall (325-766-3871) before we start and pull anything it requires.

  • Can you re-roof an old barn, cotton shed or equipment shed outside Roscoe?

Yes. We look at the purlins and framing first and tell you honestly whether the structure will carry a new roof or needs repair. Standing seam and stone-coated steel are the usual choices, and we work the farms up US 84 toward Hermleigh and along the county roads out to Loraine and Champion.

  • How long will my Roscoe roof replacement take?

Most houses are done in one to two days once we start. Larger or steeper roofs, decking repairs and metal roofs take longer, and after a storm like June 2023 start dates move out because the whole county is calling. We give you the real date, not a hopeful one.

  • Can I finance a roof in Roscoe, and what warranty do I get?

Financing is through Wisetack; prequalify online without affecting your credit. Every roof carries our written workmanship warranty, up to 1 year on repairs and up to 5 years on replacements, plus the manufacturer's warranty. As an Owens Corning Platinum Preferred Contractor and CertainTeed ShingleMaster we can offer both manufacturers' extended coverage.

Nearby towns we also serve: Sweetwater, Colorado City, Snyder, and Robert Lee.
